Carbon emissions are the major reason why the world is in panic mode today because they are the greenhouse gas with the highest amount of emissions in the atmosphere.
This has caused climate change and global warming, leading to extreme weather events like heatwaves, severe droughts, tropical storms, and wildfires.
In order to reduce carbon emissions and rid the atmosphere of already accumulated greenhouse gas, we have come up with 4 carbon capture solutions that will help the world meet its emissions target and by extension, ensure a clean planet for all. We hope you find it useful.
Carbon capture from vehicle exhaust
The automotive sector is one of the major polluters as most vehicles that are being manufactured are designed with fossil fuel in mind.
Reducing emissions from these vehicles then becomes a primary target in ensuring the sustainability of the automotive sector.
Capturing carbon emissions from the exhaust pipe of vehicles is an option that should be explored more in all regions of the world. A carbon unit is attached to the vehicle exhaust pipe and it captures up to 80% of carbon emissions.
The captured carbon is then pumped into offload tanks at fuel stations and sent to concrete producers and other end-users.
Direct air carbon capture system
Direct air capture (DAC) is another solution that will help us meet our emissions target if adopted on a large scale.
It is the process of using giant fans to capture carbon dioxide directly from the air which then bonds with chemicals known as sorbents. When the sorbent becomes saturated, it is heated to 80-100C so as to release the captured carbon dioxide.
The modern direct air capture system is made up of a non-toxic chemical blend in cooling tower waters that absorbs CO2, along with a piece of equipment that processes CO2 and has a small physical footprint.
Modern DAC systems reuse air from cooling towers, unlike traditional DACs which use large fans to ensure airflow at top speed. This helps in reducing DAC costs.
Carbon capture for synthetic biofuel
This entails capturing CO2 emissions from industrial plants and using them in electrolyzer plants that run on renewable energy for green hydrogen production.
This is a clear form of circular economy solution with a reduced environmental impact.
As hydrogen is emerging as the main energy carrier to scale up decarbonization, this solution is crucial to transitioning to a carbon-free economy.
Carbon capture through ocean storage
This carbon capture and storage solution employs deep-sea sediment injection technology which pushes liquid carbon directly into ocean sediments.
As a result of that, carbon dioxide, even though it is stored in structures beneath impermeable layers, is immobilized by capillary effects, its dissolution in the aquifer, and its reaction with minerals in the ocean.
