About The Book Buzz Foundation
The Book Buzz Foundation is an NGO that was founded by Lola Shoneyin (an award-winning writer and cultural activist) in 2012.
The foundation has three main aims:
Promoting literacy
The Buzz Foundation does this through the development of reading programs for children.
One such program is The Right to Write project which primarily provides educational and media training opportunities, and is designed to achieve deep penetration into communities through the written word and a variety of multi-media and communications platforms.
Creating reading spaces
The Book Buzz Foundation aims to support schools in the creation of reading spaces, seeing as many state schools cannot afford to build, develop or maintain libraries which, though essential, are expensive.
By creating mobile libraries (that can be wheeled from class to class during ‘Literacy Time’), the foundation gives school children the opportunity to turn the pages of a book at school during the school week.
Organizing cultural festivals
In five years, The Book Buzz Foundation has established Ake Arts & Book Festival as one of the most important cultural events on the African cultural calendar. The festival takes place in different parts of Nigeria.
