The EKOenergy ecolabel is calling for applications for its Climate Fund aimed at advancing renewable electricity projects in developing countries and regions.
This is to enable additionality to consumers’ choice of renewable energy and help realize its Sustainable Development Goal 7 (affordable, clean energy for all).
EKOenergy’s licensees pay 0.10 € to the Climate Fund for each MWh of EKOenergy-labelled energy sold. These contributions go to carefully selected renewable electricity projects aimed to alleviate energy poverty in developing countries and regions.
The projects that EKOenergy finances through its Climate Fund are mostly small-scale solar (PV) and wind energy projects, and all financed projects are managed by experienced organizations and are executed in conjunction with local NGOs.
Application process
EKOenergy is currently looking for 6-10 solar and wind energy projects of 10,000 to 40,000 € each.
The project proposal should be written in English, not more than 3 pages, and sent as a pdf document to [email protected], not later than February 15, 2022.
The application from the implementing organization should state the following:
- Experience in the field of renewable energy.
- Bookkeeping and resources e.g annual budget, main sources of income, and how bookkeeping is audited.
- It must also answer the following questions:
- How much capacity will be installed, how many people will benefit from it, how it will guarantee the quality materials used, where the project will take place with specified physical location as well as a description of the area.
- How it plans to communicate about the project, how it will communicate at the local level and in the country where the project is being implemented, and how it can help EKOenergy share the news about its project towards energy consumers in general and users of EKOenergy-labelled energy in particular.
- How it will follow up with the project after the installation, How it will ensure the adequate operation and maintenance of the project in 30 years, how it will involve the local community in the operation and maintenance of the project in 30 years.
- What its impact will be on the local community (including links with the UN Sustainable Development Goals), and how the local community will be involved in the project.
The procedure for reporting will be dependent on the size of the project and the local conditions and it will be stated in the contract between EKOenergy and the beneficiary.

Applications will be evaluated based on how well they meet the following criteria:
Eligibility: Main applicant’s experience, solvency, and reliability as well as their strong involvement with local organizations or NGOs (20%)
Innovation: Project’s quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and relevance (20%)
Impact: Project’s impact in terms of installed volume and beneficiaries compared to the cost of the project (20%)
Scalability: Project’s long-term viability, sustainability, and replicability (20%)
Advert prospects: Opportunities for advertising the benefits of renewable energy, both locally (by the beneficiary) and internationally (by EKOenergy) (20%)
