#Women4theClimate: A spotlight on Kaossara Sani, a Togolese climate advocate

Hello readers.

Welcome to #Women4theClimate on CleanbuildVoices!

Today, our spotlight shines on Kaossara Sani who is a Sociologist, Writer, and Youth climate advocate for climate justice.

The 26-year old activist is based in Lomé, Togo, and has been upholding the climate action movement and fight for the protection of nature in the country.

She is the Co-Founder of the #ActOnSahelmovement which uses climate actions to promote peace in the Sahel region – an almost arid line of territory that spreads across the African continent from Sudan to Senegal and is plagued by water scarcity, a decline in grain yields, and armed conflicts.

As one of Africa’s youth climate advocates, Kaossara educates leaders in the Sahel on the importance of investing funds that are meant for the military in addressing climate issues and empowers women with lands, access to electricity, clean water, and solar-powered stoves.

Through Act on the Sahel, she is helping with irrigation projects, trying to stop desert encroachment by providing seeds as well as planting trees.

Kaossara is also the founder of the Africa Optimism movement which is dedicated to promoting peace and climate solutions in Africa through education.

Through the initiative, Kaossara educates students about climate change, provides students access to education, creates libraries in schools, and promotes access to books and reading culture in children.

She recently wrote and addressed an Open Letter on Climate Change Justice and Reparation to COP26 President, Alok Sharma, seeking climate justice for the 46 Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

She also calls on wealthy nations to lift the growing debt burden on the LDCs, provide climate finance and technical support for them, and compensate them for the destruction of their ecosystems.

Kaossara is of the opinion that Africa contributes least to climate change and yet, is affected the most. For this reason, she educates children on this fact and hopes to achieve her set target in the region.
